Women’s Equality Day 2022 – Why We Should All Care

Women’s Equality Day is observed every year on August 26 in the United States of America to mark the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment (also known as Amendment XIX) to the United States Constitution in the year 1920. This amendment forbids the states and the federal government from denying citizens of the United States the right to vote on the basis of sex. It was initially observed in 1971, declared by Congress in 1973, and is proclaimed by the US President every year. The United States Congress designated 26 August as Women equality day in the year 1973 to commemorate the sacrifices of women…

Announcements:

President Richard Nixon issued Proclamation 4147 on August 26, 1972, designating August 26 as “Women’s Rights Day.” This was the first official proclamation of Women’s Equality Day.  On August 16, 1973, Congress approved H.J. Res. 52, which declared August 26 to be Women’s Equality Day and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation commemorating the day in 1920 when women in America were first guaranteed the right to vote.

In 1973, President Nixon issued Proclamation 4236 for Women’s Equality Day, which stated in part: “However, the fight for women’s suffrage was only the first step toward full and equal participation of women in the life of our country. We have also made huge strides in recent years by overcoming sex discrimination through our laws and paving new paths to equal economic opportunity for women. Women are now making significant contributions to the quality of life in virtually every sector of our society. Nonetheless, much work remains to be done “.

Women’s equality Day 2022: Celebration

We rely on hardworking women — mothers, grandmothers, partners, sisters, and friends. Spend some time today thanking them for all of their physical and emotional labour on behalf of others.

Women-owned businesses should be supported. Use your purchasing power to help female entrepreneurs. Lists of women-owned businesses can be found on the Small Business Administration’s website or by contacting your local chamber of commerce.

History:

The day was chosen to honor the moment when Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed the declaration granting American women the right to vote under the nation’s constitution in 1920. But the sense of gender equality was still on paper. So the nationwide protest on women’s equality started in 1970 and that in the subsequent year 1971, the protest intensified again which resulted in the introduction of a resolution to designate august 26 AS WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY by Congresswoman Bella Abzug of New York.
